Smart Dispels Rumours of Southern Service Interruption
SpeedNet Communications, the parent company for Smart, has issued a press release dispelling the notion that the company’s service to the south will be cancelled as a result of ongoing litigation with B.T.L. According to the release, SpeedNet is working diligently and has invested millions of dollars to establish its own network, allowing the company to become fully independent of B.T.L. This afternoon we spoke with C.E.O. Ernesto Torres.
Ernesto Torres, C.E.O., Speednet Communications
“We have been advised or heard that there are some unfounded rumors that SpeedNet is going to stop providing service in Punta Gorda and the surrounding areas. We found the rumors to be very absurd to say the least. But in a case like this, if you say nothing, you simply feed the rumor. So we simply decided to go ahead and issue the release to assure or reassure our customers in Punta Gorda and the surrounding villages that we are there to stay and that we will do—not only improve our service to Punta Gorda, but we will also expand the coverage we have in that district. As you know, we contracted some capacity to Punta Gorda to our competitor; that matter is now before the court or went before the court. But what we contracted was intended to be an interim arrangement until SpeedNet was able to construct its own facility to link Punta Gorda to its network. That work is now underway and that was also a point raised in the press release to reassure the customers that that construction is underway.”

“Does this then effectively put to rest all these concerns with regards to the service that is being offered, the quality of the service currently being offered as well, and any other issues related to the overall services of SpeedNet?”
Ernesto Torres
“Yes, that will definitely put everything to rest and customers will be able to see the construction as it unfolds because it is a construction along the southern highway. So they will be able to see the evidence that in fact what we are saying in the press release will be what is taking place.”
Isani Cayetano
“Is there a timeline for the completion of this infrastructure to get Smart’s own system in the south?”
Ernesto Torres
“Yes, as the press release indicates, we have that construction due to be completed by the end of February. And we have every confidence that that date will be met. So we umm…we want to reassure the customers once again that there is no such validity to the rumors being circulated in Toledo to that effect.”
