Cops top soldiers in friendly football match
It didn’t make it in time for Sports Monday, but we think a hotly contested football game between the twin pillars of national security played over the weekend deserves some special attention. During Family Day activities coordinated by the Belize Defence Force on Saturday at the Marion Jones Stadium, one of the headline events was a showdown between the soldiers and the cops. With trash talk coming from both sides of the field, it was be goal for goal in regulation play, taking the match into overtime. When the long whistle finally blew, the police squad emerged triumphant by a five to four margin. We understand it was with a heavy heart that the winner’s trophy was handed over by B.D.F. Commandant Lloyd Gillett to Commissioner of Police Gerald Westby. Down but not out of hope, it is rumoured that the soldiers get a chance to redeem themselves when the police host their sports day in June of 2006.
