No other Saturday open says Carnival Committee

Story PictureOne person with a diverse view than that of the St. George’s Caye Day Society is Marva Gardiner, treasurer of the September Celebrations Committee and a member of the Carnival Committee. This afternoon Gardiner told us that there is no hidden agenda behind putting both events on the same day. According to Gardiner, out of the ten committee members who cast votes, the decision was passed eight to two…the two opposing being representatives of the St. George’s Caye Day Society. Gardiner maintains that the committee did its best trying to sort out scheduling conflicts between the different events.

“There is no motive; the thing is Carnival has traditionally been on the second Saturday in the month of September and it so happens that the second Saturday is the tenth of September this year.”

“Our thing is that you go to the ceremonies tenth morning, you go to the parade, there is an activity at Yabra Green that should go until six o’clock, but when you go out at three o’clock in the afternoon there is no one out there and we just thought that Carnival would be something that will bring up the tenth.”

“It’s not every year that the tenth of September will be on a Saturday, so it’s just this year that Carnival will be on the tenth because it’s a Saturday and the rumours is that the Carnival parade will be along with the tenth of September parade, that is not true, the carnival will start at three o’clock at Yabra green. And then there is another rumour going around that every year on the tenth there will be Carnival, that is not so, it’s just because it so happens that the tenth of September is a Saturday.”

Among the first Carnival related events is a junior and senior pageant this Saturday night at the Belize City Centre.
