Case dismissed against accused molester
In Magistrate’s Court today, the lack of public bathroom facilities caused a mix-up so severe that a man accused of molesting an eight-year-old girl did not stand trial. The accused, Steven Jorgenson, was released with charges dismissed after the child failed to take the witness stand although a court officer called her name six times. On August thirtieth, 2004, the child had reported to the Family Violence Unit that Jorgenson sexually assaulted her four times that week and on another occasion penetrated her with his finger and then masturbated. A medical officer certified the child had suffered injuries during the ordeal. It was not until Jorgenson had left the building that it was learned the child had indeed been at the scene, but was downstairs waiting with a social worker because her mother had gone looking for a bathroom in another building.
