Former N.T.U.C.B. President on Postponement OSH Bill

Dylan Reneau

Another issue that was on the discussion table at the AGM of the N.T.U.C.B. was the Occupational Safety and Health Bill. In January 2014, the OSH Bill was tabled in the House of Representatives.  The bill seeks to have employers ensure that equipment and safety measures are in place to benefit both businesses and employees in the instance of accidents or mishaps on the job. It’s been a year since it went to the House for a first reading, and since then, other bills have been passed and ratified; including an amendment to the Sugar Industry Act which went through its three stages in one day. Former President of N.T.U.C.B., Dylan Reneau speaks of the delay in the passage of the bill.

“The fact that we have to have this tripartite relationship and the union has to continue to play a role in pushing the agenda of workers. And one such instance that I would hope that the government would cure is the fact that we’ve asked for the Occupational Safety and Health Bill. And it has been a year since that first reading and we have not had a second reading and conversely we have the business community that have asked for bills and those are passed in one day, three readings. It shows a serious level of disrespect for workers issues and I am hoping that the government can seriously look at it and make some changes that will benefit workers.”
