Social Security Board helps police with computers
This morning in Belmopan the Belize Police Department’s newly established Scenes of Crime Unit received some much needed help in the form of six computers. The donation was made possible by the Social Security Board, which according to its Chairman Yasin Shoman, feels compelled to help in the effort to reduce crime. In her closing remarks, Deputy Commissioner of Police Maureen Leslie, said that the police are doing what they can to keep up with technological advances, and organisations such as the S.S.B. play an important part in that process.
Maureen Leslie, Deputy Commissioner of Police
“We are seeing a rise in crime nationally and internationally, and Belize being a small nation is not left behind. And we are also seeing a massive rise in the use of I.T., information technology, and Belize being a small nation can’t be left behind either. So we are trying to cope with the changes, everyday changes, we are trying to adjust ourselves within our financial budget that we have and we look to our donors. So we are very, very happy that the Social Security Board and other entities have seen it fit to assist the Police Department whenever they can.”
Yasin Shoman, Chairman, Social Security Board
“At Social Security we feel that along with all the other citizens of Belize, we do need to take an active role in the fight against crime. Too many of us prefer to sit back and say, “That dah the police job.” Well it’s unfortunate, but the police on their own cannot do it all. We need to help the police as much as we can. At Social Security we feel that it is part of our duty to so help.”
Accepting the gift on behalf of the department was Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ismael Cal. The computers will be used to enhance the Police Department’s fingerprinting system.
