Camalote girls remain undefeated
Good evening, I?m James Adderley with this fresh dish of Sports Monday. The Cayo Female Softball Tournament presented week two of the playoffs yesterday at the Joan Garbutt Stadium inside Esperanza where the host team, the Wolverines, and the defending champions Camalote Duurlys Cristal both went in with undefeated records from the double elimination playoff format.
We go to the top of the first inning as Lenisha Jones serves up this long single to Tamira Orellano who brings home two RBI?s to make it a 3-zip Camalote lead.
Conversely, the Esperanza batters find less success against the impressive Francine Salazar. First, she gets Adelphia Jones with the infield out and here she gets Felicia Myvette to pop up. She then turns on the heat to strike out Patricia Spain to end the inning.
In the top of the second, the bases are loaded when Bridgette Flowers pops up to quiet that particular threat.
In the third, Laura Bradley lays down a good bunt, but gets help from terrible fielding which allows the runner to score all the way from second. And we have a 5-zip ballgame.
Of course, Francine Salazar keeps mowing down the Wolverines. Noreen Thomas, she?s gone; Denise Gordon swings with power but gets struck out; while Josephine Caretella is simply overwhelmed by Salazar?s powerful right arm.
In the top of the sixth, this hit by Sharon Flowers off Miss Jones brings home Emogene Coyi from third as Camalote goes on to post the 6-zip big W, handing Esperanza its first playoff loss.
Checking in on game two, it?s Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy on defense against the Unitedville Hot Mama?s and what a pitching duel this turned out to be.
Kenreen Gillette gets Shakira Lemott to bring the curtain down on the first inning.
We?re in the bottom of the first inning with runners at first and second when the pitcher Gillette comes up with this long fly that scores the runner from third.
In the second, Kenreen gets good defence to get Anna Jones, Alma Gomez swings at the wind in retirement, and Shern Robateau falls victim by popping to the pitcher.
Folks we?re in the top of the fifth when Shern Robateau hits to the shortstop Shadalee Ho who steps on second base and throws out the runner at first to complete the double play and keep the 1-zip lead going.
We?re in the top of the seventh when Shakira Lemott tries to lay down this bunt, but gets thrown out at first base as Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy records the 1-zip big W and Hot Mama?s are chased out of the playoffs.
This Saturday?s schedule at Camalote Roaring Creek Grace Kennedy and Esperanza Wolverines will clash in game one. The winner moves on to the championship series in game two against undefeated Camalote Duurlys waiting in the wings under the double elimination format.
In other softball news, male play in the Cayo league on Sunday saw Royal Devils clobber the Garden City Lions 21-10. On Sunday?s schedule, Falcons will host the Garden City Lions at Hope Creek.
In volleyball news, the Female Beach Volleyball Tournament staged at Dolphin Park here in Belize City saw Go-Tees consisting of Kim Williams and Sherlene Johnson jolt Jaguars, made up of Barbara Cadle and Sherelee Turton 25-17 in the finals to complete an undefeated outing. We do send out congratulations.
The next event in this series is set for August twenty-eighth at eleven a.m. at Dolphin Park. Don?t miss it.
