Fugitive Surrenders to GSU Boss
Today a man who was the subject of an intense manhunt is on remand at the Belize Central Prison. Jermaine Sanker went on a mini-crime spree in Corozal late last year and has been eluding Police since then. On December ninth, 2014, a warrant in the first instance was issued for his detention on suspicion of being involved in robberies with the use of firearms. Police never caught him, but when they got a little too close for comfort on Tuesday, Sanker decided to play it safe and hand himself in. Officer Commanding the Corozal Formation Superintendent Andrew Ramirez gave us an update on Wednesday.
Supt. Andrew Ramirez, Officer Commanding, Corozal Police
“A seventeen year old minor reported that he was accosted by three male individuals, and he identified Jermaine Sanker as being one of the assailants in relation with that matter. Also we have another young man who was also robbed and he identified Jermaine Sanker. It would appear that Sanker went on a crime spree, and as a result, based on him being identified and named in the witness statement we had issued a warrant in the first instance. We have acted on numerous tips. At times we have even visited the Ladyville area based on information we received, and he continuously eluded Police officers. His name was also mentioned as a suspect in the Bel Cuisine armed robbery that occurred a few weeks ago. Yesterday sometime in the morning the Special Operations Team headed by Cpl. Marvin Salam visited an area in Ranchito where the said Jermaine Sanker was spotted, sought after, but he eluded the Police in relation to that. Warning shots were indeed fired because Jermaine Sanker was considered armed and dangerous. Unfortunately again he had eluded capture and then he finally made communication with the Officer Commanding the Gang Suppression Unit where he decided to hand himself over personally to Mr. Mark Flowers. That was done sometime after eleven last night and Jermaine Sanker is presently in Corozal Police custody pending the charges I had mentioned in relation to robbery.”
This morning, Jermaine Sanker was formally arraigned on charges of attempted robbery and robbery and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison. He is to return to Court on March fifth.
