Dangriga Machete-man Shot by Police Officer
Also in Dangriga, forty-three-year-old Gregory Williams is tonight recovering from gunshot wounds to the legs after being injured by a police officer at the start of the weekend. On Friday afternoon, sometime before one o’clock, Williams accosted twenty-seven-year old Elroy Quiñonez who was seated outside a bike shop on George Price Drive. According to Quiñonez, a resident of New Site Area, Williams initially rode past with a machete in hand, hurling profanities at him. A few minutes later, Williams returned and threatened to chop him. An officer who happened to be in the area, observed what was taking place and ordered Williams to surrender the machete. Williams refused and proceeded to advance towards Quiñonez who retreated to avoid being injured. The officer fired a single warning shot into the air when Williams continued to attack Quiñonez. Undeterred, the machete-wielding assailant was subsequently shot twice in the legs. Following the incident Williams was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital for treatment. It is unclear at this point whether any charges will be brought against him.
