Ports Authority moves against maritime violations
Following a series of fatal and near fatal accidents at sea, the Belize Ports Authority promised to become more aggressive in its enforcement of the nation’s maritime regulations. And that attitude was manifested today in Belize City Magistrate’s Court when the Authority brought criminal action against a number of boat owners accused of operating outside the law. Among those prosecuted today was well known businessman Arnaldo Pena, who was charged with operating a vessel without a valid masters certificate, without a seagoing certificate, and without any identification marks. The vessel in question is a forty foot boat that operates out of the Fort Street Tourism Village. Pena did not show up for the court action and he will be resummoned for September first. The offence allegedly occurred on July tenth.
Another mariner who did appear in court was fisherman Jose Ramirez. He was fined eight hundred dollars for operating his sixteen foot skiff “Oligita” in the waters around Caye Caulker without a masters certificate. He has until September thirtieth to come up with the money or spend eight months in jail. All boat operators who carry passengers for hire must obtain a masters certificate from the Ports Authority.
