Kriol Festival to be held Sept. 8th
It may still be several weeks away, but the Kriol Council is now extending an open invitation to anyone who would like to be a part of this year’s Kriol Festival. According to National Kriol Council President Myrna Manzanares, the festival is especially for those who may believe that the Kriol “noh gat no kulcha.” The event, scheduled for September eighth, will have on display everything and anything that traditionally has been identified with the Kriol Culture including some games that are sure to bring back memories. This morning Manzanares spoke about the festival, as well as the official opening of the council’s new headquarters.
Myrna Manzanares, President, National Kriol Council
?We have many different activities that will be happening during the day. We have our Kriol language collection and that will be there and children or adults can go and deal with that. Then we also have a number of different games that children can play and adults too can play them, because they?re fun. Games like Lim ahn Spoon, some of the old traditional games, Brok Makachista, Outsaid Joobel and some other nice games. We also will have the villages, some of the Kriol villages from along the River Valley, as well as from Gales Point that will come, and each of them will have a booth. And we have prizes for the best booth, so they will bring?whether it?s arts and craft or whether it is food or whatever it is that will showcase the Kriol culture in Belize.”
“We have finally been able to get a spot beside the Music Industry Association of Belize, which is right on the House of Culture, right underneath the tourism building, we have the other half of that or the other part of that, at least for the mean time until we can find a permanent place. But that means that we will be able to open a resource centre, we will be able to accommodate students and teachers because every year we get loads and loads of information and people want to do research.”
