“Uno” Shot on Freedom Street
This morning, at least six gunshots rang out on Freedom Street, Belize City and when the echoes died away, twenty-one year old Ian Adolphus lay on the ground bleeding. The resident of the Yarborough Area was apparently the target of a lone gunman who stalked him and took advantage of an opportunity when Adolphus was alone and vulnerable. The area, where he was shot that is just off Jane Usher Boulevard, is a traditional hotspot, but in recent weeks things have gotten quiet in the old capital. Police are hoping that the shooting of the well known youth isn’t an indication that tensions are escalating once again. Today, the Commander of Precinct Two sought to reassure residents of the area that they will keep things under tight control.
Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, O.C., Precinct Two, Belize City Police
“Police responded to a shooting incident on Freedom Street, where they learned that one Ian Adolphus, twenty-one years Belizean, was walking on Freedom Street, and upon reaching its intersection with Justice Street, a male person on a bicycle rode up on a bicycle in front of him and fired several shots. One caught him on the right elbow, one on the right shoulder and one to the left side of his chest. The male person then rode off and made good his escape. At this time the victim Adolphus is stable at the KHMH and Police are looking for the suspect. Police officers had just passed that area since we had stepped up our patrols in that area as well as other areas in Precinct Two, and we have good coverage. It’s an unfortunate situation, but we can assure the public that we’ll continue to put Police presence and increase the presence in the area. I haven’t received any information as yet as to motive, but the Police are out there investigating and as soon as we become aware we will inform you guys.”
Doctors operated on Adolphus this morning, and he is currently in the ICU at the K.H.M.H. Nobody has been detained for the attempted murder, but we understand that Police are looking for a suspect known to them.
