One more prisoner captured, only one left on the loose
Another escaped prisoner has been apprehended. He is twenty-seven year old Robert Hill. The fugitive was caught by police around four this morning in an area off Mahogany Street in the St. Martin De Porres Area of Belize City. Now with Hill safely behind bars, police are concentrating their efforts on apprehending the last inmate who remains at large. He is twenty-two year old Edwin Javier Vanegas, who was on remand at the prison for burglary. Police say they believe Vanegas is still hiding somewhere in the city, however they suspect he may be trying to head west. Once again, the police are asking the public’s assistance in recapturing Vanegas, but caution motorists not to pick up any hitchhikers. Meanwhile, police would like to clarify reports that prisoners being transported cannot be handcuffed. Department policy dictates that prisoners cannot be handcuffed to the vehicle in which they are transported, but in fact can be handcuffed to each other or by themselves. In this instance, police say the prisoners were wearing handcuffs at the time of the break. News Five understands the prisoners managed to get the keys to the handcuffs by overpowering one of the police officers on board. Ten prisoners were being transported from Court in Belize City back to Hattieville on Tuesday when they took over the bus. Seven of the passengers made a run for it and as of tonight six are sleeping at Hattieville.
