R.C. Church refuses to bless Teacher’s Commission
The Teacher’s Commission that the Ministry of Education is proposing to implement is still getting mixed reviews from stakeholders. There have been poorly attended public consultations throughout the country and last Wednesday different managing school authorities, including the clergy, were invited to a sit down with the ministry. It appeared that the clergy was on board with the ministry’s program and on Wednesday, the Council of Churches issued a statement in support of the commission. While it appears that many are falling in line, one group, perhaps the largest has gone rogue and it’s not giving its blessings. Late this evening, News Five received a statement from the Bishop’s Commission on Education for the Roman Catholic Church that basically refutes the unanimity of the Council of Churches. It says “the proposed amendments to the Education Act and Rules are incomplete in achieving the comprehensive reforms necessary to reengineer the current education system. Essentially, if government proposes to reform, in fact replace, what exists, it has to be and it must be, in exchange for a product of excellence, far superior to what is currently being delivered to our students today”. And according to the church, the document is seen as a work in progress that will have to evolve after a broad and thorough study. Though the Roman Catholic Church has not blessed the commission, it will soon present its own concerns and recommendations to the country.
