Women in Art Exhibition Opens Thursday

Final touches are being made to the Belisle Art Gallery where the fifth annual Women in Art Exhibition will open on Thursday night at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts. The event, which will be held under the theme, “Shadows,” is featuring female artists such as Winsom Winson and Briheda Haylock and the curator, Rachel Heusner. Although the call for entries was made only two weeks ago, Heusner says that approximately forty unique pieces will be featured in the exhibition. The collection will show several artists’ perspectives on what’s hidden in the shadows. Today, News Five got a sneak peek at what’s in store for those who attend the opening on Thursday.

Rachel Heusner, Curator, Women in Art Exhibition 2015

“We sent out the call for women artists and we have so far received close to about forty pieces, very interesting stuff. We gave a range of things from realism to abstract; we have an installation and the opening performance is going to be so interesting. So we are inviting the audience to come, the public to come and see. The whole of the event is ‘Shadows,’ so it is a new interesting idea and I think people are going to enjoy it.”

“As curator, talk to us about some of the concepts that you are going with in putting out the exhibit.”

“Like I said, when the idea went out about ‘Shadows,’ for me, it was an artistic improvement from the standpoint of the artists to be able to look a little bit further. But we’ve gotten different ideas coming in as to how different people perceive shadows from a conceptual idea, to an artistic….it’s just very interesting and I think you need to come and see.”

“What should people expect when they do come out?”

Rachel Heusner

“To be edified, to be entertained and to enjoy a nice evening of the arts.  You are going to experience shadows from all different angles, from the dark side to the light side to the interesting side.”

The event starts at seven p.m. and it opens with a presentation in spoken word, song and other aspects of the creative arts performed by women.
