3 Students Recognized in Poster Competition

Three students: Vanyah Vernon, Victor Lopez, and Amauri Amoa placed first, second and third respectfully in the Belize City Lions Club’s twenty-seventh annual Peace Poster Competition. The students, who are from the Primary Schools Art Skills Training Pilot Project (PSAST), were among hundreds who submitted paintings under the theme, “Peace, Love and Understanding.”  While all three winners received certificates and cash prizes, Vernon’s winning entry was sent to Lions International to compete among thirty-five thousand other entries worldwide. Today, Communications Officer at the National Institute of Culture and History, Shari Williams, told News Five about the success of the program.

“We are very happy to send our heartfelt congratulations to three of our students from the PSAST program. The PSAST is the Primary School Art Skills Training Project and it is being collaborated in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The objective of this program was to bring the creative art, particularly painting, to the children of Belize, particularly those of south side. So we collaborated with them. It is being facilitated by an art instructor, Fiona Huang, who is a Taiwanese currently living in Belize. she has done an extremely incredible job with these children and so today we are proud to say congratulations to three of her students because they entered a poster competition and all three of them placed first, second and third. These three students received…besides cash prizes, they receive a certificate and the recognition. But the first place winner was sent to Lions Club International and will be participating in a competition where there will be over thirty-five thousand entries. So again, we want to send congratulations to the students of this art program. We want to congratulate Miss Fiona Huang and all the schools who sent children to take part in this project. And we want to encourage other schools to start an art program in your school today for the children of Belize.”
