From video competitions to written works, to poetry and even painting; this year, Caribbean and Latin American countries being asked to submit its best in art pieces: paintings, sculptures from artists. The call came to the National Institute of Culture and History and News Five spoke with Communications Officer, Shari Williams about the competition that has big bucks up for grabs.
Shari Williams, Communications Officer, NICH
“One of the things we try to do at NICH is reach out to the artists, especially in terms of showing them opportunities that exist internationally. And one of the biggest international competitions that’s coming up is an Emerging Voices 2015 Award Competition. This year, they are asking for Latin American and Caribbean Regions to submit art pieces. It could be paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures or any other mixed media kinda work. They are looking for artists who are outstandingly talented, but they are also looking for pieces that teaches a little about the region; that kinda shows the world what the Caribbean and Latin America has to offer. So we are inviting artists, the deadline is April the tenth to submit their work. If artists need more information they could contact me at the Bliss. You do not necessarily have to submit the art piece, but they are looking for a high resolution photograph of the piece. So artists who need assistance in creating that high resolution photograph can contact me at the Bliss. An artist can submit up to four pieces, but it has to be work that has been done in the last five years. So recent works, up to four pieces you can submit and it can be any art medium. The award is simply extraordinary. Each finalist will be invited to New York in October of this year and for each category, the prize is about forty thousand dollars. So it is an extremely huge competition and we are inviting Belizean artists to take on this opportunity.”
