Deep Sea Drone Discovered off San Pedro

We’ve reported the story about a boat that has run aground just outside of Caye Caulker and it still hasn’t been removed from the reef. Well, on Wednesday afternoon, the folks in San Pedro were curious about a large submersible discovered in front of San Pedro, some five to six miles out in the sea. The piece of equipment measures almost twelve feet long and has a depth rating of almost ten thousand feet, is one that would normally be used for deep water exploration, research and other deep water works. The object was jammed in the reef. We checked with the San Pedro Police and they explained that there is no need for concern because they have determined that the submersible is a water drone that is controlled by a pilot with several cameras and is used for discovery and research. It is usually attached to a ship and collects particles way below the ocean. The object is computer operated and has tentacles to pick up samples. The police are also checking to see if there was any vessel in Belize doing research, but there is a possibility that the submersible could have come from as far as Mexican waters. Police have also ruled out the possibility that the submersible was used to traffic drug because it has no compartment to transport narcotics.
