Two women in custody for missing treasury money
Two women; one a government employee, are expected to be charged this Friday in the case of the missing funds the pension fund administered by the Treasury Department. The missing monies, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars, were reportedly deposited in an Atlantic Bank account sporadically since 2007 to present. News Five has confirmed that two women are in police custody. According to late reports, a second class Treasury employee, Monica Escarpeta, is expected to face the music in this case. The other person linked to the investigation is Karen Young, who reportedly has a fat bank account at Atlantic Bank. The case file is now with the Department of Public Prosecutions and today Prime Minister Dean Barrow told News Five an arrest is imminent. Escarpeta has been on interdiction from the Public Service Union on half pay since the news broke at the beginning of the week. The investigations have revealed that the payments were made to hundreds of legitimate bank accounts of pensioners. But another deposit was made in their names using different ID’s to other commercial bank accounts.
In the other case involving a lesser amount of twenty-four thousand dollars from the City Council finances, no one has been charged. According to the prime minister this file is also before the D.P.P. for her determination. Last Friday the PM made the revelation of the missing monies at a press conference but Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers maintains that they can be accounted for in a system called under-depositing.
