Juventus beats top Guatemalan team
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and you?re riding this fresh wave of Sports Monday. Not surprisingly folks, Emily the Hurricane put quite a damper on things here in Belize over the weekend, except for the Benque Fiesta which provided for us Belizeans, most of the non-Emily excitement over the past two days.
The blast of the drums inside the Marshalleck Stadium heralds the big ticket on this year?s celebrations as presented by the community of Benque Viejo inside Cayo.
Invited to centre stage is the Guatemalan first division Football Club Coban Imperial who have accepted the challenge to test the 2005 Regent?s Cup champion Juventus of Orange Walk.
The beautiful Miss Benque, flanked by two power shakers from inside the area, kicks off the ceremonial ball, kisses the Guatemalan keeper, and now its time to play football.
Folks, first things first, we?ll have to agree to disagree that first half of this ballgame on Saturday is an extended feeling out process; even if it felt a little more like combat to Raul Celiz.
And of course it?s truly difficult to observe any foul play by Jerome Serano of Juventus against this Guatemalan striker inside the eighteen.
Certainly, we?ll have to give the edge in fist half to Club Coban Imperial as they looked more offensive more of the time.
They might have had Charlie Slusher in trouble on this press ? let?s just say the bounce goes his way. And at the half we have a scoreless ballgame.
In the opening minutes of second half, the visitors try to steal the lead with a header off this set piece, but the ball travels wide.
And then Juventus has to scramble on defence to deny the Guatemalans the opportunity to open the scoreboard.
Folks, we can only conclude that Charlie Slusher has a guardian angel on duty today when this missile bangs off the crossbar of screaming pass his ears.
This nudges the Belize team into action. Oliver Hendricks does the hard work here, but fails to finish.
A couple minutes later, this splice from Christopher Hendricks sets up Rudolph Flowers and his left foot chip gives Juventus a 1-zip lead just like that people.
Want to see that left foot again? Well it?s an educated left foot; this time Rudolph Flowers bends the ball around the wall to beat the Guatemalan keeper and make it a 2-zip ballgame with his second goal of the match.
In the waning moments of this confrontation, Harrison Roaches mounts this individual effort that sees him speed pass the Guatemalan defence to make it a 3-zip final score for Juventus of Belize over Club Coban Imperial of Guatemala.
Charlie Slusher, Goalkeeper, Juventus
?Coming into this game we know that it was a lot at stake, not just Juventus from Orange Walk, the champion of Belize, but it was a Belize Guatemala thing. Although we don?t try to let it be that way, but at the end of the day it was Guatemala against Belize. We are the champion and we had a lot to show that the champion of Belize must be respected. Regardless of what happen, we are the champions in our country and we believe we have good football, so we had to go out there, and we know that a lot of Belizeans were supporting us that are at the game, and I got to thank God that at the end of the day we won impressively.?
?Just the second goal was kinda a big relief and that was when we really believed that this game was ours and I guess after that, our team get motivated and went for a lot more goals, but that has been our team for the whole year. We have time when we play a little slow and all of a sudden we started to explode, we go into that second gear or that third gear. And again, it?s good that it was Juventus that played today; we know each other, we have a lot of confidence, and again thank God that we won.?
In cycling news, Miss Emily put a stop to the Queen of the Hills female cycle race scheduled for over the weekend, but the association has now set the new dates, has rescheduled it for July thirtieth and thirty-first. It features the best in the business; you won?t want to miss it, so keep those dates in mind.
Hey folks, that?s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
