Belize City Man Sentenced to 2 Years for Wounding His Wife
A Belize City man who was recently released from prison is back behind bars tonight to serve two additional years after he violated a protection order and went to the home of his wife. It was a visit that ended violently because fifty-six year old Nathan Pratt beat her so badly that the injuries were visible when Eldi Landero presented herself before the Chief Magistrate. Pratt was escorted in cuffs to the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and was charged for wounding Landero on March twenty-first. He pleaded guilty. According to a report made by Landero, Pratt grabbed her around the neck and began to choke her. He then threw her to the ground and punched her in her face. Pratt offered an explanation which was significantly different from his wife’s. He claims that when he approached the house, Landero was leaving and when she spotted him, she went into her bag for her phone to call the police officer who lives nearby. Pratt then approached her and put his hand over her mouth, but his daughter saw what was happening and ran down the street to get the police. Chief Magistrate Anne Marie Smith remanded him overnight and this morning he was sentenced. Pratt served two years and two months behind bars for theft and he is now looking at another two years.
