Well-known lawyer assaulted in sleep
He has successfully defended some of the baddest of Belize’s criminals, but early this morning well known attorney Simeon Sampson himself became a victim of crime. According to police, Sampson was fast asleep at his home on Allenby Street in Belize City when around two this morning he was awakened by something pressing down on him. It turned out to be an intruder who placed a knife against Sampson’s neck. The attorney reported that he was subsequently tied up and interrogated about the location of some drugs. Presumably after not receiving the answer he sought, the robber relieved the lawyer of a hundred dollars in cash, an A.T.M. card, and a bottle of premium whiskey. Sampson eventually wriggled out of his ropes and flagged down a passing police patrol. Despite a search of the neighbourhood, however, no arrests were made. There were no signs of forced entry to the house and police investigations continue. In addition to his many years of work as a criminal attorney and human rights activist, Simeon Sampson has also served as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
