Excellence of Double Head Cabbage: cricket champs

Story PictureGood evening, I?m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. The Harrison Parks National Cricket championship reigned supreme at Double Head Cabbage on Saturday where the host team Excellence went into game two of the three game series with a 1-game lead over Brilliant of Crooked Tree.

For certain, the Double Head fans who had not seen their team make a championship run since the 1950?s were exuding supreme confidence and were not even afraid to let it show.

This bubbly feeling permeates all the way to the pitch as the Excellence team got off to a roaring start, paced by the dominant bats of Ian Broaster and Selbert Martinez. Remember Martinez from last week when he became the hero, he hits a four right here.

Ian Broaster, nevertheless, is the man today as he swings for six. Of course his bat-mate, Selbert Martinez is no slouch either and he strikes for six on this swing. He would finish with seventy-one runs, six more than last week?s production.

And we just can?t help but show you another six from the veteran Martinez. However, on this play he gets caught out by another veteran–a senior statesman–Vernon Jones, and he is retired.

Still, Ian Broaster continues his solid run, striking for yet another six. Broaster would finish with the century of one hundred and two runs and that?s something special people.

The end for Ian comes when Alpheus Gillette mows down his wicket with a three-quarter ball. Between Ian and Selbert, Excellence had gotten one hundred and seventy-three runs.

By the time the ten out arrives, Excellence has steamed to a three hundred and twenty-five total and Oswald Gillette, the sixty-five year old veteran for Brilliant, had taken three wickets.

And as the Brilliant team heads to intermission, the faithful from Crooked Tree let their support be known.

For the Crooked Tree crowd, this out on Arturo Wade must have brought a sinking feeling. After all, it?s only the first bowl in their turn at bat.

Mercifully, things took a turn for the better when Vernon Jones stepped up to produce runs, he would finish thirty-nine. His partner at bat, Landis Wade, also is on top of his game today as he finds the target.

Unfortunately, this partnership ends when Wade asks the veteran Vernon to pull out speed, which he just didn?t have.

Ervin Wade then comes on and tries to make a rush and this six certainly helps the Crooked Tree cause. It?s Wade again with another six. He finishes with a team high forty-six runs.

Nevertheless, when Ian Broaster forces Ervin to pop up here, it brings an end to the run for Crooked Tree and the new National Cricket Champion of Belize is Double Head Cabbage Excellence who totalled three hundred and twenty-five to Crooked Tree?s one hundred and seventy-five. We say heartfelt congratulations to Double Head Cabbage. Yeah, let the party begin.

Ian Broaster, Excellence
?It?s a tremendous feeling and right now it just wah be a bash after this. The first one, with many more to come.?

James Adderley
?From today?s ballgame against this Crooked Tree team, obviously this team needed somebody to come up with the big runs. You posted the century today, tell us about that.?

Ian Broaster
?Inna big games I have to step up and make the big plays James and dah just that happen today.?

James Adderley
?Did you get comfortable early then??

Ian Broaster
?Early. I know I mi ah do it today, done know. I had to win by any means necessary.?

Jason Broaster, Excellence
?Coming to Double Head Cabbage, I left Double Head Cabbage for some time and I won two championships with Sunrise of Lord?s Bank, but nothing compares to this. Just the other night we were sitting around and I asked the manager of the team when cricket started here in Double Head Cabbage and he told me it was 1950. Double Head went along way and I?m very proud of my guys, the eleven guys that played on the team, the manager, the fans, to bring this one back home.?

Oswald Gillette, Brilliant
?We had two areas of mistakes. One, our bowling was not up to par, that was one of the first mistakes, why we gave up too many runs. Our bowling was very weak today. Secondly, our batting. Our guys decided to push a little too much for runs in the early part of the game.?

James Adderley
?Did that first out, that first pitch when you went on offence, did that district from the momentum??

Oswald Gillette, Brilliant
?Oh no, no, no, that?s cricket. You can lose one or two or even three wickets in your batting and you can still survive. It?s what happens after that. We needed six runs, plus our turnover and we had that when the second wicket fall, the captain, we had that. The mistake was made after that.?

Turning to the M and M Cycle Tour featuring five stages for non-elite riders, which concluded on Sunday. We did receive the footage, but we couldn?t get the details we needed to get inside the event. Nevertheless, we congratulate Leroy ?Lyrics? Trapp for emerging the best with an overall time of ten hours, six minutes, twenty-one seconds through five stages. A minute and fifty-three seconds behind is George Abraham who settles for second; Ken Gladden third; Raymond Hyde fourth; while Adrian Faux rounds out the top five. To M and M Engineering, the sponsor of this event, we say kudos, good show.
