Appeals Court sends granny to jail

The Director of Public Prosecutions hasn’t had much luck lately in the Magistrate’s or Supreme Courts… but today in the Court of Appeal it was definitely the D.P.P.’s day. The case involved an incident in July of 2004 when fifty-three year old Mehetebel Slusher intervened in a fight and used a machete to chop a woman in the head and arm, causing her to nearly bleed to death. Charged with dangerous harm, Slusher was convicted and fined five thousand dollars by Justice Adolph Lucas. Not content with what he thought was too light a sentence, D.P.P. Kirk Anderson lodged an appeal. So said, so done as the three-man panel agreed with Anderson, ordering a new sentence of two years imprisonment to the grandmother and mother of six. Slusher will begin serving her time on Wednesday. The Justices on the Court of Appeal are President Elliott Mottley, Manuel Sosa and Boyd Carey.
