Retired UWI Professor Attends Anglican Synod in Belize

Professor Neville Duncan, a former lecturer at the University of the West Indies and author of several publications, is in Belize. The retired Professor in Caribbean Policy Studies is here on the invitation of the Anglican Church to hold forth during its upcoming synod. The objective of the lecture is to educate the flock on small business entrepreneurship.

“The Anglican Church had a planning meeting for their synod coming up soon and I was one of the experts asked to make some presentation and basically my presentation was around the issue of social entrepreneurship; going beyond charity into production and productivity. The Anglican Church was interested in that and I prepared a paper for the synod as well and the Lord Bishop here invited me to come because he felt this was a message that Belizeans should hear.”

“You’ve come a long way from being a lecturer at the University of the West Indies to now promoting entrepreneurship and what have you. Can you explain the link between that and what you are currently in Belize to do?”
Prof. Neville Duncan
“Well, basically you are always a lecturer and I was thinking that I should be doing something else. I loved and enjoyed what I did and that was in the area of political economic and international impacts on countries like ours, but I came back to the micro-level; the small medium size businesses and the struggles that people have to succeed. I felt the concept of social entrepreneurship, social enterprise, attracted me very much. And so I took the decision and I said I am going to retire and I retired some many years now and I made a list of ten things I’d like to be involved with, ten types of businesses and it so happens that honey is the first of that lot. So I intend to expand. And having done that, I said, you know I should have been doing this a long time ago. I enjoyed my lecturers; it was something that felt more natural, more realistic that people needed to be a part of it. So I am marrying that teaching experience with my own experiences—sometimes not the best of being in a business, learning by doing.”
Professor Neville Duncan is scheduled to make appearances on Open Your Eyes on Thursday morning and at UWI and the Bishop Sylvester Memorial Hall on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
