Y.W.C.A. holds poolside fundraiser
The Young Women’s Christian Association is once again getting ready to hold its annual summer swimming programme, scheduled to get underway in July. It’s just one of the many pool activities the Y.W.C.A. has planned. And as with all public service oriented programmes, the activity’s success depends on the community’s support, which is why a couple of young women are wasting no time encouraging Belizeans to attend the first fundraising event. Peace Corps volunteer Beth Preston and Y.W.C.A. Pool Committee Member Maureen Dawson told News Five how you too can enjoy a splash in the first Y pool bash tomorrow evening.
Beth Preston, Peace Corps Volunteer
?We offer swimming to both children and adults. Our summer programmes will start on July fourth, and we also offer lifeguard training, we certify our lifeguards. And we go into schools and we work with school children?well actually they come to the pool and through physical education we offer basic water safety. The pool is also open daily and it?s a great place to just come and bring your entire family, especially on the weekends.?

?But it does cost to run these programmes and that?s why the committee is involved in a number of fundraising drives. What exactly will be taking place on Friday??
Maureen Dawson, Member, Y.W.C.A. Pool Committee
?Well we wanna embark on a massive campaign to start raising funds for the pool so that if we don?t have sufficient people using the pool on the weekends we can still go ahead and maintain the pool. It costs us a lot of money and we?re finding now that the pool fund is almost nil. So for the general upkeep, we are now seeking other ways of trying to maintain that. One of our first events that we will have is a pool bash tomorrow night. It?s going to be a happy hour kind of thing. We are trying to target the working class, people that would normally after they leave the office on a Friday evening, find a spot to hang out, drink some beers, talk, socialise, that kind of thing. Now what we will have tomorrow, we?re going to have an old school bashment. So from the time you step in at five-thirty tomorrow evening, right up until they decide to leave, all they will get is a selection of old school music: reggae, hip hop, dancehall, the works.?
The fun also includes some water activities, so if you plan to get wet, dress accordingly. The pool bash starts from five-thirty on Friday evening. Cover charge is only five dollars, but plan to bring extra cash because there will be drinks and other treats on sale. Meanwhile, the Y.W.C.A. Summer Programme starts on July fourth, so if you would like to sign up your child to learn how to swim please call 203-4971 for more information.
