Social Security sponsors charity ride
Despite the vast improvements made to our roads and highways over the years, travelling from Punta Gorda to Corozal, even in a car can be an arduous journey. So you can imagine what an adventure it will be to travel from the southernmost to the northernmost town by BICYCLE. That’s exactly what a group of more than fifteen riders have signed up to do. No, these people aren’t into pain, they are doing it for a good cause: raising money for the students of the Stella Maris School and the Princess Royal Youth Hostel. The event, organised by the Belize Social Security Board, kicks off five a.m. Wednesday in Punta Gorda and will take the pelothon into Dangriga, following a stop in Independence. Day two will see the riders take on the mountains, travelling from Dangriga to San Ignacio with a stop in Belmopan. The survivors of that leg will then ride the next morning from San Ignacio to Belize City before heading to Corozal on the final day. I got tired just reading that. But according to officials of the S.S.B., these men and women will work together to make a difference in the lives of some of the country’s most deserving citizens. This afternoon, Belize District branch manager for the S.S.B., Denise Mahler, told us how you can join the team.

?The Ride Across Belize is a part of our anniversary celebrations. Social Security is twenty-four years, has given twenty-four years of service to Belize on June the first. So as a part of this week?s celebration, they are having a Ride Across Belize, which is the only event that spans across all the branches.?
?It?s not a race, so I guess there is cooperation in riding and they support the weaker riders if you will. And they have service vehicles and everything, so it?s like a support thing. And as you know it?s a fund-raising event. There are a number of staff members who are riding and there are other–I remember last year a couple guys who had ridden in the Cross Country had done the race also. And you can do a leg if you want; if you are a riding enthusiast and you just want to do a portion of the ride, you can also do that. So you don?t have to do the whole thing from P.G. to Corozal.?
If you would rather donate some dollars instead of sweat and tears, you can do so at any Belize Bank branch, account number 20012449 for the Ride Across Belize fund. But if you are interested in participating in the event, please contact Rolando Zetina at 822-2163 to register. All monies raised from the event will be invested at the Stella Maris School and the Youth Hostel. Funds have been raised from S.S.B. staff and business houses, and following the event the Board itself will make a contribution.
