Blackouts result of poor maintenance, not sabotage
A series of blackouts left the country in the dark last night, but according to Belize Electricity Limited, the outages were not the result of sabotage. According to a company rep, they are taking the rap for this one, citing that guy wires for a pole supporting the main transmission line from Mexico rusted out at ground level, and in last night’s lightning storm, broke loose and fell across the live wires, faulting out the whole system. B.E.L. is reporting that the blackouts lasted between a half an hour and an hour and a half until the gas turbine kicked in. The company says the issue of poor maintenance will be addressed immediately to avoid any similar occurrences.
