Two dead in separate N. Hwy. accidents
Corozal police had their hands full on Saturday following two separate fatal traffic accidents on the Northern Highway. The first occurred around eight-fifteen following a collision between a mini bus and a Ford Bronco. Preliminary investigations reveal that thirty-four year old Daniel Acosta was driving the Bronco from the Mexican border to Corozal Town, but when the vehicle passed between miles eighty-six and eighty-seven Acosta lost control and crashed into the mini bus driven by fifty-seven year old Teoficio Gilharry. When police arrived on the scene, they found both drivers suffering from multiple injuries. Acosta and Gilharry were rushed to the Corozal hospital, but Acosta died en route. Gilharry has since been transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Some five hours later police were back on the highway, this time responding to another incident between miles fifty-seven and fifty-eight. This time, however, they did not come across any damaged vehicle but instead the lifeless body of twenty-eight year Alfredo Gutierrez who appeared to have suffered a serious injury to the head. Investigations reveal that earlier that night Gutierrez was along with his friend, Elicio Novelo, drinking heavily at a bar in Trial Farm Village when they decided to leave the establishment and walk home. Police are not sure what happened along the way, but suspect that the men either fell asleep on the road or were knocked down by a vehicle that did not stop to render aid. If you have any information that can help the police in their investigation, you are asked to call the nearest station.
