Football and Basketball Stats from Weekend Sporting Events
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
PLB 2015 Champion, Verdes FC headed north to Louisiana Field to face an Orange Walk selection in preparation for its opening match in CONCACAF’s Champions Tournament against the Mexican professional team, QuereHero sometime in August. It starts off with a bang people…five minutes in, Verdes keeper Benito Moriera comes off his line to make this interception and strikes Omar Duran with the extended right knee and is lucky to get away with only a yellow card. More importantly, Eliazar Itza steps up to beat him in the near corner to give the selection a 1-zip lead. Moriera continues to live dangerously when he receives this defensive pass and dances his way out of goal to eventually make the clearance. Talk about a professional shot people, watch the give and go between Aldair Chan and Eliazar Itza who finishes with a beauty of a shot that has power, speed, bend and placement as the Oragne Walk selection spurts to a 2-nil lead at the 23rd minute. Hey, who is the PLB Champion here?
Stung and embarrassed, the champion strikes back. It comes around the 28th minute when Rodney Pacheco, El Capitan, curls this set piece to Alcides Thomas whose header makes it a 2-1 ballgame. At the 34th minute, Alcides Thomas sends this pass across the goal mouth; it reaches Marlon Mordlan and just like that we’re tied at 2apiece. OW looks to break the tie off this spot kick just on top the 18 and Benito Moriera is forced to give up his body to make the save against a charging Andrew Allen and at the half, we have a 2-2 tie. Early into 2nd half play, Osmar Duran attacks off this poor defensive clearance by Verdes but the Verdes Keeper, Jusut Guerra comes up with an impressive finger touch save to deny OW the lead. However, there would be no more goals in this one as both teams decided to settle for a 2-2 stalemate.
In other football news, the OW U-12 championships as Young School and White House battle for the title. Kenrick Tellez of Young School gets the opportunity to move the scoreboard but is failed by the final touch. At the other end, Luis Sosa gets this chance with the header only to see it sail outside the sticks. Luis Sosa of White House gets this look at goal from pointblank range and misses the target. In 2nd half action, it’s Tellez again looking for the Young School goal but is beaten by the keeper for possession. The ballgame ends in a scoreless draw. Said Perera gives Yougn School the lead in the penalty kicks for the title with this nice placement for the 1-nil. At 13 and under level, it’s Orange Walk Central and Elite promo battling for title. The Elite Promo Team gets this freebie when the Stars keeper fumbles the ball to Joan Bull for the 1-zip lead.
In track and field news, Belize has been doing well in the Central American Secondary Schools Track and Field Championship being staged in Managua, Nicaragua. Kaina Martinez received silver in the 100 mm with a time of 11:59 secs. Alexia Neal struck for bronze in the 110 mm hurdles in 1 minute 6:67 seconds. Katy Sealy threw the shot put 11:25 meters for bronze. Meanwhile, big kudos to Katy Sealy who struck for gold in the Heptathlon with 4614 pts. Brandon Jones was big also with gold in the triple jump posting 15:31 meters – you’re large. Shanika Augustine took bronze in triple jump so did Kenneth Brackett. And Belize struck for silver in the 4X400 meters relay with tits time of 4 minutes 1:62 seconds. We say congratulations to the national secondary schools sporting association and its athletes.
Finally to the basketball scene, Infotel and Complex General faced off Friday night in the Inter-Office Tournament at Bird’s Isle. Delroy Faber literally put Infotel on his back striking for the game highest of 13 pts and a mind boggling 21 rebounds. He got help from Stafford Young who hit 8 pts and Devin Bladden who threw up 7. High man for Complex General was Ron Nicholas who posted 11 pts and 7 boards in the 53 to 33 loss.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
