1 Week to Dangriga Bye-Election
In other political news…Just one week away, Belize will see its second bye-election. The first was in Cayo North earlier this year and this time it will be the constituency of Dangriga which includes Sarawee and Hope Creek Villages. It’s going to be a P.U.P./U.D.P. race with newcomer Anthony Sabal and seasoned Frank Pawpa Mena of the U.D.P.. While there were questions of whether the P.U.P. would contest this bye-election after their own Ivan Ramos stepped down, today Party Leader for the P.U.P. says that things have been looking good for them and they have every confidence in their candidate.
Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Party Leader
“I think the campaign has been going very well. I think our greatest asset is our candidate, Mr Anthony Sabal. He is a distinguished educator. He was the principal of the high school, the dean of the sixth form, so he is well known, well respected and well liked in the community. He has a good organization around him; all of the P.U.P.s come together. There is a united team with a sense of purpose; some P.U.P.s who I haven’t seen for a long time who have become disgruntled with the former representative have come back into the fold. I think that is a good thing. Again, I make the point that the hardest thing is to get people to come out and make them understand and not just to say well I like Mr Sabal, but the fact that they come out and vote for Mr Sabal. Because, the election, while it won’t change the government, it is an important bye-election.”
