New exhibit at Image Factory
It promises to lift spirits in a time when things appear gloomy on the horizon. That’s the sentiment expressed by Gilvano Swasey, the curator at the Image Factory Art Gallery. The latest exhibition entitled “Out of the Blue” took six months to put together and includes works from island artists from Caye Caulker and San Pedro. The paintings depict not only the artists’ emotions, but the way they see their environment.

?In some pieces you will see some of the things are dreamy, like in Nelson Young?s pieces. He is more like a philosopher to his art, he doesn?t really paint scenes, he paints feelings and thoughts and ideas. In Papo?s works, he?s very realistic. He does a mixture of island art and imagining. He comes to the city every so often and he would pick out images and when he goes back to the island try to recreate them. So it?s like an outsider looking in, even though we are in the same country, looking in and seeing, okay this is what happens in the city.?
?Many times we do exhibits at the gallery and it?s always been artist from the mainland, in a sense. It?s not having been guilty on our part, but what happens is that many of these artists from San Pedro and Caye Caulker, they have a very good or ready market, so it?s very hard for them to get their works together and bring it to like a place like Belize City where things are a little bit slower than their city in a sense. So the main concept was that these artists are very talented and have a different vision than us. As you can see, the colours are very vibrant, very, bright, very promising in a sense, especially for us today in the city where everything is kinda gloomy in a sense. So the whole concept was that these artists wanted to show the bigger population that they are talented too and that they are being creative too.?
“Out of the Blue” officially opens tonight at the Image Factory on North Front Street and runs for the entire month of May. All pieces on display are for sale.
