Great play, but star fielder’s leg is broken
And just before we go, we have one final play to show you, coming out of the just concluded Central American Juvenile Female Softball Championships. This was a bittersweet effort turned in by two of the outfielders for the Belizean team. On a ball hit to left-centre-field, centre-fielder Kaina Martinez and left-fielder Nikita Young both gave the play their best shot. Both outfielders called for the ball, but it appears neither of them heard the other. Despite the collision, Martinez somehow managed to hold on to the ball and retire the batter. The impact, however, resulted in Young breaking her right leg at a point between her knee and ankle.
Team Coach Delcie Lizama this afternoon told News Five that doctors have placed Young?s leg in a cast, and it will remain that way for the next six weeks. After that, the young star will need at least another four weeks of rehabilitation before she can attempt a comeback, which means that she will not be able to take the field with her home town team, Independence United, which begins competition this coming weekend. On the positive side, despite her injury during the final game of the tournament, Nikita Young won the R.B.I. title and shared the home run title with her colleague from El Salvador.
