Morales Says the Claim Must be Resolved

Since the beginning the week, the Organization of American States along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has organized a number of activities to draw attention to work of the O.A.S. in keeping peace along the Adjacency Zone. The flurry of diplomatic activity concluded with a forum at which visiting diplomats were all invited. You could not tell the difference between the children from the bordering communities of Melchor de Mencos and Benque Viejo as they performed on stage to make the point that, on the ground, the people to people contact was flourishing. The Foreign Minister of Guatemala says there is need to solve the claim.

“Our countries are in development and they need to invest their resources in education and in technology. As Costa Rica for example has already done; we must invest in education, nothing else, we must invest in our children in our future. Security and fighting organized crime are common and challenging within our countries and I will tell you tonight that our security agencies are already working in a coordinated fashion to tackle this also important task. Protecting the environment and our national resources is also of concern to Guatemala and in that respect we value and appreciate the government of Belize’s efforts because we focus on the persons first. I would like to express the desire of my country Guatemala to live in peace and harmony with Belize to resolve the few outstanding differences in a peaceful fashion as we have done so far.”
