Mexican artists explore “memory”

There is a new exhibition in Belize City featuring Mexican artists. And while the theme may intrigue you, the works themselves are sure to surprise you.

It?s called ?Memories? and it?s the latest exhibition to hit the gallery of the Mexican Cultural Institute on Newtown Barracks. According to curator Gerardo Espejo, each of the artists had free reign to explore the broad theme.

?It?s a very kind of open field for many interpretations. And all these artists kind of work with a particular perception of what is memory for them. So even though there are many paintings that participated, the overall look to this particular theme gave us many perceptions that were all very interesting.?

The show is part of a larger contest held every two years in Yucatan. In 2004, more than seventeen hundred artists from throughout Mexico were recognised for their work, but Espejo says only two hundred paintings, photographs, and installations were transported to Belize for viewing.

?Mostly surprise. It?s kind of not to the point of saying that it?s a shocking experience, but yeah, I think it?s a surprise because one won?t think that in Yucatan we already kind of accomplish to be good at these disciplines that are not the common disciplines where most of the artists participate.?

?Knowing the space and knowing what the people in Belize are expecting from us, we chose the very best works to bring here and I think people from Belize will enjoy it and hope to visit the exhibit in the Institute of Mexico.?
