Farmers of the Year named

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the names of the 2005 Farmers of the Year. Senior Farmer of the Year is Burton Caliz of the Blue Creek Road in Toledo. Caliz operates an organic farm, growing a variety of vegetables as well as pigs and chickens. He stresses harmony with the environment.

Lady Farmer of the Year is Doris Diaz of Progresso Village in Corozal. Diaz farms twenty-five acres, using irrigation for her vegetables and fruit trees as well as raising tilapia, pigs, and sheep.

The Junior Farmer of the Year title went to Luis Arrevalo of El Progresso in the Cayo District. Like his older colleagues, he grows a variety of fruits and vegetables, including oranges, cashew, craboo, coconut, and plantain.
