Partial eclipse visible in Belize
You may not have noticed it due to the heavy cloud cover, but there was a partial eclipse of the sun this afternoon. It is one of two solar eclipses this year and was visible over a corridor from the South Pacific to the Americas. Solar eclipses occur when the earth, the moon, and the sun line up and the moon casts a shadow over earth. A total eclipse would have plunged the earth into total darkness. The next solar eclipse will be October third and visible across the Iberian Peninsula and Africa. The next visible partial eclipse for this part of the world will not be until May of 2012.
