James Alvarez Convicted for Drug Trafficking
A Belize City man is spending his first night of what could possibly be six years behind bars on a conviction for drug trafficking. Sixty-one-year-old James Alvarez appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Ladonna John today and was charged for possession of a controlled drug with the intent to supply for drug trafficking. On Tuesday, Police searched Alvarez’s home at Eden Site and found him with a black plastic bag containing one hundred and twenty-four grams of marijuana. Alvarez pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years at the Belize Central Prison. But it could be double that, since it was discovered that he owed the court almost ten thousand dollars for a drug trafficking conviction in 2011. That translates to another three years behind bars.
