Cayo teen drowns in Mopan River
The enticing waters of the Mopan River in Cayo claimed the life of a thirteen-year-old boy from Unitedville Village on Easter Monday. San Ignacio police say Enid Gentle went down to the river in Bullet Tree village to bathe with the family of forty-five-year-old Gregorio August yesterday afternoon. But sometime during the outing, Gentle apparently got caught up in the strong currents near the bridge and went under. August’s wife raised the alarm that Gentle was drowning but attempts to save him failed. Police, responding to a call for assistance, retrieved Gentle’s body from the river and took it to the San Ignacio hospital where the child was pronounced dead on arrival.
