Privy Council rules against Meerabux
In another bit of judicial news the Privy Council in London yesterday handed down its ruling in the Appeal by former Supreme Court Justice George Meerabux. The five justices denied the appeal, saying that the Belize Advisory Council had acted properly in removing the judge for misbehaviour on the bench. The original complaints against Meerabux were brought in September of 2001 by the Belize Bar Association and attorney Lois Young Barrow. In dismissing Meerabux’s appeal, the Privy Council affirmed the earlier decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, that the former justice’s rights had not been infringed by his removal from office.
