CEMO Promotes Informational Exercise Books

Wayne Usher

The hurricane season started in June but in time for the school, year, the City Emergency Management Organization wants your support in purchasing exercise books that they say has very useful information for this hurricane season that ends in November. Wayne Usher, CEMO’s Liaison Officer with the Belize City Council, partnered with the Belize Port Authority to produce the books as an extension to the schools program under the CEMO public awareness plan.

“The message is to be prepared. We want to be prepared message to go to its widest public audience and we thought that by doing it through the school children, they will in turn take that message to their parents and have them get into the preparedness mode. And remember, we are in the height of the Hurricane Season which is in September, so we are well ahead of it in terms of the outreach program of CEMO in the schools. So, I wanted to introduce the book.”

“So, just talk to me about what are some of the things that the book has?”

“The features of the book include the cover itself which is eye-catching. It has the Hurricane Warning flags which is our early warning systems for hurricanes and it has all the flag signals from the preliminary watch down to the all clear and it all specified and the feature that is important as well is that it lists all Hurricane Shelters in Belize City. And if the severity of the storm is anticipated to be above category three it has the evacuation routes that are to be taken out of the city into the interior. Then on the back you have the tables so they can use it also as their book in school and then in the inside cover we have how to track a hurricane from when it is way out and up to land fall. And importantly, it has tips about what to take to hurricane shelters. So, it is a useful book that you can use for hurricane preparedness and an ordinary book that you use for school.”

Usher says that while the books go for fifty cents each and six dollars for the dozen, the monies will not be used to generate a profit but to print more books for sale. They can be purchased at the CEMO Office that is on the top floor of the Commercial Center.
