Community Family Day Brings Yarborough Youths Together

As many as six neighborhood teams converged on the Wilton Cumberbatch Field on Sunday where they all competed in a basketball tournament organized by Eastern Division South.  The initiative, part of an ongoing effort by the Belize Police Department, is to bring together feuding groups through sports.  The community/family sports day saw the participation of almost two hundred persons and today top cop Chester Williams told the media that the event was without incident.

“This Sunday, which was yesterday, we had another family sports day on the Cumberbatch Field in the Yarborough area.  We had over three hundred persons in attendance.  We had six basketball teams from Fabers Road, Kraal Road and the Yarborough area competing against each other for prizes and it was a day full of fun.  The guys they played their hearts out and at the end there could only be one winner and we have a second place and a third place.  First place was a hundred and fifty dollars, second place one hundred and third place seventy-five dollars.  So the team from Yarborough got first place.  Kraal Road One got second place and Kraal Road Two got third place so Kraal Road walked away with two prizes and Yarborough got the biggest prize which was the first place.”

“Aside from the prizes, was the agenda, was the objective achieved, in your opinion?”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“Yes, the objective was achieved because they had the guys from the three different communities, Yarborough, Fabers Road and Kraal Road coming together, play sports together coming to contact with each other and I must say that they were very respectful of each other.  There was no incident, no fight and we know that basketball is a very physical sport but when someone is fouled or something they get up, brush themselves and move on.  They continue playing the game and that’s what we want to see.  We’re hoping that within the next week or two we can do one in the St. Martin’s area and then eventually what we want to do is finish off with the Eastern Division South where we’ll have a team from each of the areas competing for a big prize.  So that’s what we want to do after we have gone into the different areas on south side.”

A date is yet to be determined for the subsequent family day in the Saint Martin’s Area.
