King of the Ballers Basketball finals
James Adderley, Reporting
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and you?ve logged on to Sports Monday. The mighty King of the Ballers Basketball Tournament kicked off its three game championship series at Big Birds Isle Friday night. So let?s check it out as Blackballers played host to BTL?s Scaredem Bullets.
Tonight it?s Carlisle Barrow sneaking past the Ballers defense to get Scaredem on to the scoreboard.
A.C. Augustine who would have a sub-par outing tonight of only eight points comes up with the reply for the Ballers.
And then Keith Acosta gets into the act, first with good defense and then gets rewarded as he displays a not too vicious two hand dunk.
At the end of the first quarter, the Ballers nevertheless are down by eight points.
In the second quarter Kevin Seroki finds his range and strikes for three and he would finish with ten points.
Up by ten points Darwin Leslie raises up for two needed BTL points. And then he warns his way through in heavy traffic for two more he would co-lead Scaredem Bullets with nine points, which says a lot about the Blackballers defense.
At the halfway mark the Bullets lead is nine. However, the showcase tonight is Mr. Superman Keith Acosta–on this trip he visits the bank for two.
Give Acosta the assist with this long pass down court to the unattended Earl Johnson who gets two easy points as the Ballers take a two-point lead.
Johnson then deals to Leroy Forbes who gets two more points and at the end of three it?s a fifty-five to forty-nine Blackballers lead.
Folks in the fourth quarter, BTL Scaredem Bullets would only score eight points and here?s two as Lennox Bowman comes up with the loose ball and goes all the way for two of his eight game points.
On the Ballers side, Keith Acosta is simply unstoppable. Seroki finds him on the move and the slam is automatic. Keith would finish the only two double of twenty-eight points and ten rebounds. Both game highs as the Ballers take game one of the three championship series seventy-five to fifty-seven. Game II will be presented on Friday April first right after the Easter Break.
Turning to the football scene Kremandala Lake hosted the San Pedro Seahawks in Week nine of the Regents Cup yesterday.
Folks we?re only some eight minutes in when Emory Nunez wins this ball on the left side and fires into the danger zone. The ball bounces off Krem defender Wilson Brooks and Stanley Reneau can only watch in dismay as the auto goal gives the Seahawks a one zip lead.
The Islanders look for more when Frazer finds Landi Pinelo but he misses the target.
In one of the few times the Lake has an open look at goal, Warren Flowers seems caught between a shot and a pass as the ball sails wide.
In the opening minutes of second half the Krem teams almost profit from an auto goal, but its not to be.
Folks from our vintage point Jarbi Alvarez pulls down David McCaulie, inside the eighteen, but Referee obviously disagrees.
Keep your eyes on this play people. John Trapp invades the Krem goal area; he is taken down from behind, the referee rules penalty.
Seahawks Team Captain Landi Pinelo steps up and he blows the opportunity to double the lead as Stanley Reneau reads.
The San Pedro team gives auto win in an ugly one zip affair.
In other results from around the league, Kulture Yabra and Cayo Avengers battled to a one to one stalemate Saturday evening at the MCC Grounds. Sagitun and Calcutta Bulls also battled to a one to one draw. While Juventus bombed winless Print Belize Griga four zip.
In other sporting news, the twenty-sixth annual University of Belize relaton was staged on Saturday featuring twenty-four male runners and twenty-nine female athletes. At mile two and a quarter on the way to Belize City, the boys finally catch up with the girls and in a fine display of camaraderie these two participants from opposing teams hold hands.
Of course, then it?s time to say bye-bye as the boys go onto claim their fifteenth victory while the number of girls win stalls at ten.
For the record the males started at San Ignacio. The females get off at Belmopan and we would like to say congratulations to them all for keeping this fine tradition going.
In cycling new, the 2005 Jr. Cross Country ride staged yesterday saw Carlo Guerra of Western Spirit grab top honours in a time of three hours, fifty minutes and twenty-two seconds on a solo flight and we say congratulations. He beat out Darnell Barrow of Guinness Seahawks and Justine Williams of Bel Cal in that order. We now continue the countdown to the Annual Cross Country event set for Holy Saturday.
Finally folks in connection with the annual San Ignacio, Santa Elena Municipal Fair, the Western Community presents the Cayo Municipal International Juvenile Football Tournament featuring players between the ages of eleven to eighteen years. Teams participating are Belize, Guatemala, a U.S.A. and Orange Walk Selection. We say enjoy.
That?s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
