Thief jacks payroll for poor
Meanwhile Belize City police continue to seek a runaway robber who jacked more than five thousand dollars from members of the Human Development Department. According to the authorities, just after nine on Wednesday morning, H.D.D. social worker Jeanette Griffith and security guard Margaret Pratt were walking from their main office in the Commercial Centre to the Good Samaritan Shelter on Church Street with five thousand seven hundred dollars in cash stashed in Griffith’s purse. But as the two women neared the shelter, a man dressed in a black t-shirt, khaki pants and white cap rode up to them on bicycle and grabbed the money bag. But instead of taking off on his wheels, the thief took flight on foot, while the unarmed security guard could only watch him flee. When police arrived they recovered the bicycle and cops tell News 5 they are looking for one person in connection with the incident. News 5 understands that the missing money was part of the department’s monthly practice of distributing small amounts of cash to the homeless and elderly.
