Shakeem Humes Charged for Attempted Murder of Curassow Street Resident

On Monday’s newscast, we reported on several shootings in the city following the 2015 Carnival Road March. The first occurred around nine-thirty p.m. on Curassow Street, about two blocks away from the Raccoon Street Police Station. As a female corporal of police socialized in front of her house along with friends and her common-law husband, Joseph Debride, a gunman approached. The officer wrestled the gunman who fired several shots in their direction while fleeing the scene.  Debride was hit to the neck and remains hospitalized in a critical, but stable condition. The gunman was quickly identified as an affiliate of the George Street Gang and in a joint operation on Monday morning between the Gang Suppression Unit, the Mobile Interdiction Team and the Special Patrol Unit, the alleged shooter was nabbed. Today, that shooter, believed to be twenty-three year old Shakeem Humes, was arraigned today before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith for two counts of the attempted murder of Joseph Debride and WCP Kristine Avila. The Western Paradise resident, who once lived on Plues Street in Belize City, was also charged with one count each of Use of Deadly Means of Harm and Dangerous Harm upon Debride and one count of Damage to Property. Humes, who is no stranger to the police, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded to prison until November seventeenth, 2015.
