Art exhibit celebrates Women?s week

The art galleries at the Belize City House of Culture have featured the works of artists young and old from virtually every part of the country. And this week, the artistic talents of eight of Belize’s top women artists are on display. The featured artists include names like Rachel Heusner, Lita Krohn, Lola Delgado, Ingrid Cayetano and Mercy Sabal. Director of the Women’s Department, Carol Fonseca, says the exhibition is part of the overall observance of Women’s week.

?We have a number of activities planned. There are two major ones. We have our annual bike rally which will be held on Saturday at six am, starting on the Western Avenue actually and that will be going right in front of Y.W.C.A., which will be having its open house, starting with a breakfast in the morning. And later on we will have an open house there, where they will be featuring a number of activities that will be combined with the Police Department and a number of other organisations as well.?

?Why the need for Women?s week??

?Certainly it?s a very important week for us at the Women?s Department because there are so many issues within out society that as women we really need to focus on. And for us this week is really to highlight issues like domestic violence, teenage pregnancy, sexual harassment, HIV/AIDS and the link with women. So these are a number of issues that we are going to use this week to highlight. And with the help of NGO?s and other organisations we are hoping that we would be able to create some sort of public awareness.?

Women’s week 2005 is being observed under the theme: “Women: Inspiring Hope and Possibility.”
