James Adderley and the Weekend Sporting Highlights

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Last Thursday, Verdes FC sojourned into Mexico for its away match with Queretaro’s Gallos Blancos and this early goal by Kevin Gutierrez at the 15th minute might have gotten the green machine off its game plan. This is a wicked goal that leaves goalkeeper, Benito Morreira without option and might have exposed glaring weaknesses in the Verdes defensive posture. 6 minutes later, this corner kick bugs the commitment of the Verdes defense which allows Emmanuel Villa, the Argentinean, to squeeze through with a header for the 2-zip lead. Villa strikes again in the opening minutes of 2nd half with this nicely timed run to make it 3-nil. When Villa scores his 3rd at the 53rd minute, it becomes obvious that the Verdes defense would be hard pressed to contain him. The Argentinean professional would finish with 5 goals scored. It was a bad lose for Verdes, but with back to back wins against San Francisco FC of Panama, our team can total 7 pts. Queretaro has concluded its schedule with 7 pts while San Francisco, the Panamanian team, comes into tonight’s ballgame with 3 pts. Verdes is still alive people and they deserve our support especially in this home stand.

In other football news, the only PLB match over the weekend saw Devon Makin’s 15th minute goal hold up to blank the Placencia Assassins in a 1-zip blast. Looking to Week 5, Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. inside the Michael Ashcroft, Wagiya will host Placencia while on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the MCC Grounds, the B.D.F. will battle the Belmopan Bandits and out at the Norman Broaster Stadium, Verdes FC takes on Police United.

Checking the U-13 Mundialito at orange Walk with Vibes Alive facing Minions—we’re in 2nd half play when Allison Torres fires at Minion’s goal; Justin Lopez punches it out to Luis Sosa who makes him pay for the 1-zip lead. Sosa gets a chance to double his tally in this one on one with Lopez, but the rebound reaches Carlos Canelo who puts it home for the 2-nil Vibes Alive win. In the other matchup, Zidane Escalante opened the scoring to give Juventus a 1-nil over lead Young School in 1st half, but Young School replied with goals from Allen Castillo, Calvin Reid and Esmer Vasquez to force the 3-1 big win.

In basketball news, we caught up with the BECOL U-23 Cayo Basketball League Saturday night as Santiago Juan Warriors took on the Spartans. Jeffrey Carrillo, Captain of the Warriors, penetrates on a solo effort to bank it off the backboard for 2 of his game high 20 pts. Julio Sabido looks down court and finds Vijan Scott, who breaks the 16-16 tie in the 2nd quarter. Scott would lead Spartans with 17 pts. On this Spartans possession, Arren Roaches finds Julio Sabido who strikes for 2 of his 12 game pts and at the half, the Spartans rule in a 24 to 19 score. In the 3rd, Elvar Arriola heats up in the 3rd as he hits this long deuce for 2 of his 10 game points. Jeffrey Carrillo steps up in his role of Captain for 2. At the end of 3, we’re tied at 34 pts apiece.

We’ve got some 15 seconds to long whistle when Jimmy Carrillo gives the warriors a 1pt lead from the clarity stripe. It would hold up for the 44-43 big win for the Santiago Juan Warriors. In other results from the league, in over 35 play, Yabra crushed Belmopan 73 to 33 and Roaring Creek’s Special Effects dropped Invaders 44 to 36. In the senior division, panthers got over Snipers 72 to 63 and Falcon Ballers beat Flavas 57 to 48 and Benque Power ran past RCV Stallions 62 to 49.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
