Police arrest suspected thief
It may have been an easy break-in for two thieves, but it took a lot more work to try and get away. The action unfolded around three-thirty on Wednesday morning at the residence of thirty-five- year-old Eldon Gillett. Gillett told police he was awakened by a noise in his front yard and when he went outside to check he noticed that his Isuzu Trooper, which was left parked inside the compound, had been broken into. Stolen was an assortment of electronic equipment from the vehicle including a number of speakers, DVD’s, a cellular phone, a pair of tennis shoes, and a kit bag containing Gillett’s passport. Gillett, who is an immigration officer, says shortly after he started looking in the area he noticed two young men in a minivan. According to Gillett, the men were acting suspiciously and as he approached the vehicle, it sped off. Gillett gave chase and was assisted by a passing police patrol. The culprits were quickly cornered but managed to jump out of the van and ran away. When authorities recovered the vehicle, they found inside most of the stolen goods. Today, Belize City police arrested one of the suspected robbers, twenty-three- year-old Richard Russel. Russel has been charged with the crime of theft. Meanwhile, police continue to look for a second suspect.
