Yabra rolls in Regent?s Cup Football

Story PictureJames Adderley, Reporting
Good evening I?m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. Week six of the Regents Insurance Cup Tournament brought the red hot Juventus of Orange Walk to the MCC Grounds, which brought the question could Kulture Yabra of Belize City be able to cool them down.

Indeed, it?s a fast start for the city team when ten minutes in Norman Tilliman Nunez, fresh from the UNCAF Nations Cup inside Central America, left foots this roller that somehow gets past Charlie Slusher and Yabra takes a 1-zip lead.

Today, Tilliman is on fire, so Ian Henry finds him inside the danger zone, but the subsequent header includes over the crossbar.

On this press, Norman Nunez goes high to set table perfectly for Jeremy James and his tap gives Yabra a commanding 2-zip lead thirty-one minutes in.

Juventus tries to come back. So they go to Oliver Hendricks inside the eighteen but he gets sandwiched and might have been hurt by Paul Nunez?s left knee. He would leave the ballgame not to return. Nevertheless, the Referee rules penalty.

Up steps Orlando Ramirez for the conversion but his telegraph is intercepted by Elroy Rowley as Kulture Yabra snuffs out the threat to take a 2-zip lead into intermission.

In the meantime Oliver Hendricks appears to be really hurt and is taken by ambulance to the KHMH during the break.

In second half Norman Tilliman Nunez comes out firing this vicious low cruise-missile that screams past the far upright.

Ian Henry then centres to Daniel Thomas but good defensive work by Juventus negates his header.

At the other end Orlando Ramirez gets this open look at goal but he can?t get enough on the header to make it count.

It?s more Yabra on offense when Nunez finds Edon Yellowman Rowley but his left foot launch leaves a lot to be desired.

Meanwhile this left foot bomb Dery?s Benavidez provides a big test for Yabra?s Elroy Rowley, which he passes with flying colours.

Yabra then looks to make it 3-zip lead when Paul Nunez slides in front of the goal but Slusher intervenes.

It?s Benavidez again for Juventus but this time it?s the crossbar that keeps the punch from landing.

Folks we?re sure Christopher Hendricks would want this chance back but it doesn?t work like that when the long whistles blows it confirms a big 2-zip win for Kulture Yabra.

In other results from around the league defending champion Sagitun continues to roll with a five to one rout over winkles Print Belize Griga, Cayo Avengers clubbed Kremandala 1-zip while the San Pedro Seahawks scored the Calcutta Bulls two to one.

Turning to cycling scene, we take you out to the start of Sunday?s sixty-two mile race as presented by the Belize Cycling Association on the Western Highway.

At the halfway mark at mile thirty-one we find a solitary figure of Marlon Castillo who swept all three station prizes in the first half.

We must tell you though that the main bunch is still within striking distance. On the way back its another Santino rider Ernest Meighan who would sweep the remaining premises.

So we come to the field sprint for the big W. It?s Ernest Meighan of Santino?s with the victory forcing Gregory Lovell of BTL Fushion into second while Roque Matus of M & M engineering finishes third.

In the meantime folks this next big race on the calendar is the Belmopan Cycle Classic set for this Sunday. So stay tuned.

In female play it was Belmopan Comprehensive prevailing our Independence High in a seven to six squeaker to take the 2005 National title. Kimani Smith got the win over Beverly Vernon and we say congratulations to one and all.

In basketball news, the action in the King of the Ballers tournament at big Birds Isle saw Belize Airport concession company flyers edge out Venus Ambassadors sixty-eight to sixty–six while in the nightcap Black Ballers burned Scaredem Bullets sixty-four to sixty-three.

This Friday night will find the Black Ballers in action against Venus while Belize Airport will take on Scaredem Bullets.
