Eloy Cuevas wins conservation award
Last night Belizean environmentalists gathered in the old capital to honour one of their own. Well known conservationist Eloy Cuevas has been selected as the recipient of this year’s James A. Waight Award by the Belize Audubon Society. According to BAS, Cuevas was chosen for his work in the development of alternative livelihoods for fishermen and promotion of sustainable fishing practices. Cuevas, a resident of Monkey River has also worked in the southern communities of Hopkins and Placencia, slowing earning a reputation among his peers as an expert fly fishing guide, a skill he has wholeheartedly encouraged, especially among the women of his hometown. Every year one local person or organisation is honoured for their work towards conservation and enhancement of Belize’s natural resources.
